Insulation

I'm not sure what blog I was on where they added additional insulation to certain rooms. She wished she had added additional insulation to the bathrooms so that she wouldn't hear the water run and toilet flush. Has anyone else added additional insulation to their home? If so, how did you go about adding it (approved by the P M, just did it prior to drywall, etc)?

I would love to add insulation to the following:
  • garage
  • around the bathrooms (I hate hearing a toilet flush/showers...reminds me of an apt)
  • bonus room since it backs up to the master
Inquiring minds want to know!!

Thanks

  1. I'm interested in that too. I think I would like to add some to the bonus room for two reasons. It would keep the sound down and it may help with heating/cooling issues that I've recently read about.

  3. As others have mentioned, install the insulation the night before the drywall will be hung. Check the insulation that is already installed in the garage for the correct "R" number and purchase from Home Depot or Lowe's. Talk to your PM. Get his feedback and handle your business. ;-)

    1. Haha love it! Our PM was great at adding extras for us if we asked, and if they were reasonable. However, I'm not sure how you add extra insulation to the walls. So, the walls are made of 2x4s (which are actually 3.5 inches thick--weird right?)and one strip of insulation pretty much just fits in the wall. I suppose it is squishy so you could smash it down and add another piece, but it wouldn't be easy (and it would definitely be noticeable when you have a big ol' piece of insulation sticking out. I'd love to hear how someone had it added. The only thing I could think is that they had a different R number installed.

  4. We were told several times that they would be enforcing the "no outside work will be done on the building site" thing, so we didn't dare, but who knows since they also told us we weren't allowed to visit without an escort, but never cared or escorted me when I stopped at the model to get permission, but in our community they say that even the SRs can't get in after the locks go on.

They've also told us (in the attic) to be very careful not to compact the insulation because it makes it less effective, so I doubt squishing more insulation into an insulated space helps with heat transfer, though I would expect it to help with sound proofing, and inside walls don't have any to start with as far as I know.

If anyone actually got away with adding their own insulation, do tell!

  5. I never thought of adding insulation but it would be helpful to do so in the bathroom and the garage. Good luck!

  7. I was wondering if you got more information on this and if you went forward with it? We were also considering a sneak in attack with extra insulation
