The SUZE in ME!

I watch Suze Orman often. I love her advice and I find it hilarious what people will spend their money on (when they don't have it). I am now having a battle with the Suze in me! I know that I don't NEED anything but I WANT everything NOW! Trying to decide what items will be purchased first is the hardest part. Here is my battle with my inner Suze:

Me: I could use my emergency fund and go ahead and get the rest of the items that I want to purchase
Suze: It's not an emergency!! You don't even NEED it!

Me: I could use my credit card!
Suze: Why go into debt over something you don't NEED. Plenty of people move into a house that is NOT fully furnished. It's not like you don't have the stuff from your old house. So what is the rush?
Me: I know I have furniture from my old house but this house is bigger which requires more furniture.  I want it NOW cuz I am a spoiled (ask my dad)!

Me: What about.....my 401K? I'm not retiring soon.
Suze: Are you out of your MIND? Absolutely NOT!! Your 401K is for retirement so unless you absolutely NEED it...which you don't...NO WAY!
Me: I know SUZE, you are right! I had to throw it out there.

I know many of us are dealing with the issue of furnishing and decorating our house as soon as we move in. I have to heed the advice of my inner SUZE and just do it slowly. My first house wasn't furnished and decorated overnight and this house won't be either. It SUCKS, but it is... what it IS!!

It's a blessing to be purchasing this house and I will ENJOY it whether it is fully furnished or not.

  1. We were just discussing the same thing last night! It would be nice to start out with brand new furniture, etc., but it's not worth going into debt for it. Can always add new things a little bit here and there...

    1. I agree, the house isn't going anywhere. It will be nice enough by the holiday's!

  2. I am completely with you. I'm so tempted with refurnishing my whole house practically. I especially loved a dining room suite I saw the other day. I'm thinking I will give my own dining room a facelift and hang on to it for a while longer. We want to save our money for the things we knew we would buy at the beginning of this process. Good luck resisting the urge! :)

    1. I agree..the essentials cost a lot as well! I think I will focus on the main floor and wait on furniture purchases for the second level.

  3. Doing the same with a patio. I want it now! But looks like we need to be patient (ok I need to be patient) and wait until the dust settles a little. But is is soo difficult!

    1. I know it's so difficult but everything worth having is worth waiting for! That is what I am telling myself.

  4. We are forcing ourselves to stop buying too the only reason we bought so much furniture already was that it was 70% off and I know Suze would agree that we did the right thing! LOL

  5. Totally having the same problem! I want new and I want it now. However, we're only purchasing the essentials for now. We did buy a new living room set, but only because what we currently have is old and uncomfortable. Other than that, we're probably going to buy a dining set and that's it.

    Good Luck!

  6. I love Suzie too, my fav of hers is DONT DARE put your kids through college. Dont take out a second mortgage, 401K, or borrow any money to put your kids in college, make them get loans and help with the other things. So many people disagree, but Im totally on board.

YUP I WANT a PATIO before spring!!! I wish I wish, and yes we could put a hurtin' on our savings, but do we need to do that??? But I LOVE my patios, they are like my favorite room!! :(

Suz: Would say wait and save for it!!! Damn Suzie.

  7. We went through that too... that's why we still don't have furniture in the living room/office or in the guest bedroom yet... and probably won't for quite some time.

  8. Lol. You know I dont need to comment. But one thing I did do is sale things so it will allow me to buy other things to feed my inner spoiled child. That way, Im not dipping into debt except for things like washer dryer which I will ignore suze for. Lol. Even the pros have weaknesses...

    1. Yeah...I know (we all have weaknesses). I think Suze would approve (you NEED a washer/dryer) :-)

  10. You'll get there with furnishing the house, no worries. We have decided to hold off on a bunch for the same reason as you.

  11. Great post. I think most of us have a 'lil Suze voice once in awhile. Not necessarily a bad thing (but so annoying when I imagine all the pretty new things I could have in my pretty new house) LoL.

In the end, we will get our houses furnished, accessorized and personalized soon enough :)
