Roxul/Pre-Drywall

If you used Roxul insulation, can your confirm that one piece is equivalent to one area between the studs? So if the package says 8 pieces, I can insulate between 8 studs. I want to make sure that I am ordering enough.

What is a good light source to use while insulating since you have to do it during the evening with no power?

My pre-drywall meeting is set up for Friday, 3/1.

  1. I didn't use Roxul but I know that they are cut for the standard sizes between the studs. The problem is going to be determining if the studs are the same sizes for each wall. for instance the studs under the steps (probably where your main pipe is) was much wider than any others. The best thing to do is to go by and measure between each stud you want to insulate first, and then determine what you need. You definitely don't want to buy too much.

    1. I measured last night, so I know how many areas require the 24 vs. 16. Thanks!

    2. The HVAC unit is not it yet so I'm not sure if the ceiling area needs 24" or 16".

    3. I didnt do the whole ceiling. But i put insulation where the main plumbing pipe was. For that I just cut pieces of the leftovers to fit in the space. It wasnt the regular width of he stud.

  2. Yes, Joiful is correct. Standard studs widths are either 16 or 24 inches. Its easy to tell the difference once you have a visual.

  3. I would get one of those lights you can wear on your head, the small one. I think that is what Hank used when he did it. Good luck!

  4. I did my house. I had studs centered on 16" and got the Roxul which is technically 15 1/4 inches wide. Fits great width wise. That said, a piece of Roxul will only go up about a third of a stud in height. You need about three pieces to go up the entire length of the stud. I used about 1 1/2 packages of Roxul to do a half of my wall between laundry and family room. Check out my Roxul post..I'm Building Our Dream - Victoria Falls.

You can see, the part with Roxul is greenish and ends around that insulated pipe. Let me know if you have any other questions.

  6. Hi,
We are building a home in Morrisville,NC. Could you please give us more info on how to get Roxul from the building supplier contact #. Are these very heavy, do we need more than 2 persons to carry? When I called Lowes they said in South nobody sells Roxul :(. What kind of tools are required to do insulation. I would appreciate your info. With a toddler at home I have very little time to blog. But I love following all Ryan blogs, you all doing a great job helping everyone. Thanks!

    1. Hi,

You can order Roxul from "The Building Center" http://www.thebuildingcenterinc.com...they are located in Pineville. You have to prepay for it since it's a special order. It takes 2-3 days to come in.

One male should be able to pick it up. If not, 2 people is definitely sufficient. You only need a knife with an edge (one from out of your kitchen) and gloves to dig out places where the wire will go.

Here is a video that I watched that helped me to install it

Let me know if you have any further questions. You can email me as well. It's located in my profile.
